Sound & Stillness: How Auditory Environments Shape Well-Being

Sound bath keynote at the ULI South Carolina Whole Well Women leadership retreat

In February 2026, Urban Land Institute South Carolina invited Sumac Arts to present at their Whole Well Women Retreat, a gathering of 76 leaders from across the built environment, including professionals in real estate, architecture, engineering, and land development.

The session, Sound & Stillness: How Auditory Environments Shape Well-Being, examined how auditory environments influence cognitive performance, emotional regulation, and collective well-being. Drawing on research in neuroscience and acoustics, the presentation explored how patterned, harmonic, and nature-based sound can entrain neural activity toward calmer and more integrative states.

The session combined a research-based presentation with an immersive experiential component. The opening talk introduced participants to emerging research on the relationship between sound, attention, and nervous system regulation, as well as the role of acoustic environments in shaping workplace performance and leadership presence.

The presentation culminated in a professionally facilitated sound meditation using gongs, singing bowls, and other resonant instruments. Participants were guided through a structured listening experience designed to support nervous system down-regulation, attentional reset, and reflective awareness.

The session was delivered as part of a broader retreat focused on leadership development and well-being for women working across the built environment.

Outcomes and Participant Feedback

Feedback was collected anonymously at the close of the session.

All participants who completed evaluation forms gave the highest possible rating across all four measured dimensions:

  • personal well-being

  • contribution to the overall retreat experience

  • transferability to other professional contexts

  • likelihood of recommending the session to others

Qualitative responses indicated that participants experienced the session as a rare opportunity to pause, reset, and reconnect with internal awareness within the context of a leadership retreat. Several participants emphasized the importance of integrating moments of reflection and stillness into professional environments that are often characterized by high cognitive load and constant decision-making.

Participant Reflections

“I feel like it quieted my mind and felt like I went back to something pure. It was beautiful.”

“Very grateful for this experience. Thank you for putting this into the world. Much needed.”

“Loved your story and sharing the why.”

“Great to get reminded to look inside. Stop and reflect.”

Ongoing Interest

Following the session, several participants reached out directly, reflecting a growing recognition of the role that sensory environments and reflective practices can play in leadership, workplace culture, and sustainable performance.
